About Liminoid Games
MISSION, VISION, VALUES
Our mission is to take beloved family-weight tabletop games to the next level, by organizing unofficial online play experiences using physical game components.
We envision ourselves as both a vibrant community for tabletop gamers wanting to play physical games online, and a valuable partner for tabletop publishers looking to expand their organized play programs into cyberspace.
While we love virtual gaming, we know nothing compares to playing games with physical game components, and we value the work of physical game publishers. Thus, our passion lies in connecting gamers around the world in shared experiences rooted in physical tabletop gameplay.
OUR NAME
A liminal space is one of transition, such as a high school graduation convocation. The young adult, standing on a dais receiving their high school diploma, is no longer a student, but not yet a graduate. Both ancient and modern societies are filled with such liminal experiences, where humans advance from one state to another, passing milestones, achieving status, and discovering identities.
In 1974, anthropologist Victor Turner coined the term “liminoid” to describe optional liminal experiences that exist in the realm of play. No one forces us to play a game. We do it purely out of the desire to experience the game. And, through the act of play, we transform. We forge friendships and strengthen family bonds. We become the victor, or the vanquished. We learn about ourselves, and in doing so, ultimately become better people.
We chose the name Liminoid Games to remind us all of the importance of games in our personal development, and to celebrate the power of play to transform us as a community.
